It takes courage to run a business of your own. How do we develop the courage to be brave in our small business? Where does that courage come from?
Up until last week I’d always thought of courage as being something we have inside of us.
A good friend invited me to sit in on a fabulous morning listening to live Q&A with the encouraging and inspiring Simon Sinek. You’ll recognise his name for his iconic work “Start With Why.” Click here for his TED Talk
Simon says …Courage comes from outside of us.
His belief is that …. “Courage is based on the quality of the relationships in our lives – the support we have around us.
“We cannot do things alone, we need people around us to help, support and encourage us.
“When we have to do things that are difficult, things that are hard – we can do them because we have people around us to support us, who believe in us.
“When we get knocked over and “the storms come” we need people who care about us and say “Keep going, the world needs you. What you do matters.”
“Fostering these relationships is important and they take time, “it doesn’t happen overnight””
Have you ever had someone say to you “I believe in you” and you absolutely felt they truly meant it?
How did that feel ?
What did that give you the courage to do?
I have thought about what Simon said and I believe it is both.
Our courage comes from within ourselves AND from the relationships around us. I’ve had a number of conversations about it this week and this year is a terrific example of how we take courage from the examples of people around us.
What does this mean for us in business?
Surround yourself with people who help make you feel brave
On Social Media follow & engage with people who tell stories and show examples and make you feel brave enough to do that too.
One of the very best ways for you to feel more courage – I believe – is for you to encourage others by saying to them “Keep going. This matters!” because you can see it does matter and you believe in them.
And say this to yourself – You are brave, you can do this – Look how far you have come this year. Take courage from what you are doing and have done.
Take courage, be courageous, encourage others.
Have a terrific week and let’s go take care of our great clients and customers…..
