Nothing happens till you decide.
How do we decide and create the future we truly want?
In today’s episode I explore one of my favourite models – The 2 Future’s model and share 3 actions for your take to create the future you desire.

This Week on So You Want To Start A Business Podcast:
Today’s episode is inspired by William Hutchinson Murray who wrote the books “Mountaineering in Scotland” and “Undiscovered Scotland” which are the most popular British climbing books.
He knew about backpacks and what it meant to “throw your backpack over the wall.”
In this 17 minute episode I work through one of my favourite models – the 2 Future’s model and if you have your pen and paper you can draw along with me.
Ultimately we get to decide the future we want. Every day we decide – what actions we take (or don’t), what we think, how we act and much more
Our future is up to us –
Listen out for the 3 Actions that you can take right away and today.

Let’s get into today’s episode:
– Nothing happens until you decide
This is about mindset
This week I heard a terrific expression
“Throw your backpack over the wall.”
And it’s attributed to William Hutchinson Murray and he was Scottish and he was an Explorer and he loved to climb mountains.
He loved being in the mountains, as you can imagine in Scotland. There are lots of mountains. I love being in the mountains – the air is always different
The 2 Future’s model
To set some context for today – I’d like to start with a description of what I call “the 2 futures”
Imagine a blank page, a blank white board
On the left hand side in about the middle you draw a small circle – using a blue pen
In that circle we write “Today”
Using the same blue pen, draw an arrow across the page and at the end of the arrow write “the future”
One thing we know is that time is going to pass – that future will be here whether it is next week, next month or 5 years time
Now with a red pen … you’re going to draw a curved line starting from the blue circle “today” and the line is going to curve down to the bottom right hand corner of your page
This is the future where we start here at today and there’s this drift where we go down and we end up worse off than we are right now.
Please write DRIFT along that line – the reason for this is that here we are today and over time there is this drift towards a future where things are worse than what they are now
Let me give you a couple of examples
Covid kilos – they don’t arrive in one lump 5kg
People have drifted towards the 5kg – a chocolate here, more pizza, less exercise, more Netflix or Play Station, more takeaways …
Another example – forgetting to clean your teeth once isn’t going to cause your teeth to fall out
Years of not cleaning your teeth – results in tooth decay and gum disease
The same is true in business – I know some of you listening want to start a business and have been thinking about it for some time – and as time passes there is a drift towards being a year down the track and still thinking about getting started
Maybe you are in business and there are things you will get to “one day”
Many business owners – me included – have a list of projects we’ll get to “one day”
In the meantime, let’s do one more course, let’s sign up for one more podcast, let’s read a few more blogs, join another FB group, find out how to use Clubhouse … and all the while time is ticking by and what’s happening??
DRIFT
And DRFIT is always downwards
That’s 1 future possibility
There is another FUTURE – and this is the future that this podcast is all about
Let’s take a green pen – and starting at our blue today circle – let’s draw a curved line along and up towards the top right hand corner
Now we have a green line, which I call “The green line”
And it goes to being in a position in the future where we are better off than where we are now.
What I have observed is that the way to stay on the green line is by making decisions and by taking actions.
Making decisions and taking actions
In every aspect of life
We have 2 choices – to DRFIT or to make decisions and take action
DRFIT along the red line downwards
Or make decisions and take action to stay on the green line
Either way we behave ourselves onto which ever line we are on
And that brings me back to this idea of throwing your backpack over the wall
What William Hutchinson Murray is saying is that: nothing happens till you decide
Throwing your backpack over the wall is to make a decision – now you HAVE to get over that wall – you’ve decided and you are committed
William H Murray has this fantastic quote, which I actually am going to read you the whole thing, because I just think it’s wonderful.
William H Murray says:
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.”
Then he paraphrases Goethe’s couplets:
“Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do begin it. Action has magic grace and power in it.”
William Hutchinson Murray uses Action where Goethe’s original couple used BOLDNESS
Boldness has magic grace and power in it.
These are 2 very powerful sentences
whatever you think you can do or believe you can do – begin it. Action has magic grace and power in it.
How many times on this podcast have guests said with regards to getting started – to “Just start – just take action”
This applies to taking action to start a business, take action to call clients, to follow up with existing clients
Take action to do a survey
Whatever the action is – take action
This is SO powerful
I invite you to say it with me,
Action has magic grace and power in it.
write it in your notes
Make it your mantra for this week.
Action has magic grace and power in it.
And truly whatever you think you can do or believe you can do – begin it, take the action, make the decision.
And this is what keeps us on the green line. Be inspired by William H. Murray
I’ll just give you a brief synopsis of William H. Murray.
He was in prison for three years in world war II.
And while in prison he wrote his book about mountain climbing in Scotland.
And he had written it on toilet paper – the whole book.
The whole book was done
The prison guards found it and they destroyed it. And his, his fellow prisoners thought he would be completely devastated
Do you know what he did? He just started again, he got his pens out and he got his toilet paper out and off he went and started writing it again.
That book was eventually published in 1947 and he went on to write another book – climbing in the Himalayas.
Action has magic grace and power in it.
If you’re taking notes with your pen and paper, write it on your notes
action has magic grace and power in it.
As you know I like to finish the podcast with my “What action are you going to take today?” question
So what action am I going to encourage you to take today?
The action I want you to take is around money mindset.
Money mindset is our beliefs and our attitude about money.
There are so many aspects that we could talk about this.
For the past month I have been running live webinars – about cashflow and expenses and I also ran one about Profit First – the book by Mike Michaelowicz. Explaining the basic principles as I have applied them in my business.
I have future episodes of this podcast where I will talk about pricing and discounts and other technical aspects of money mindset.
Here are the actions that I’m going to give you, three steps from today.
The first Action is to understand, do you have enough? What is enough?
The question is how to calculate what is enough.
Do you have enough and how do you calculate enough? What is enough?
People say, Oh, I want to make a million dollars. I want to make six figures. How do you arrive at that amount Will it be enough?
I was listening to a wealth coach speaking about coaching some of the absolute richest people in the world – and they never have enough
They go from 6 figures to a million And then multiple millions and then aspire to have a B instead of an M – they want to be billionaires instead of being millionaires
They want to be on Rich Lists –
And then want to be THE richest – Elon Muck vs Jeff Bezos
When you’re in your business, what is it that you actually have? Have you calculated what enough is for you? So the first thing is, do you have enough?
How much is enough for you?
This leads to the second action –
The second action is: How much profit do you want to make?
In the webinar where I explained the basics of Profit First – where I personally in my business I started with 1% of revenue and then gradually increased to 2% and then the next increment and the next increment
What is that profit amount for you?
Remember: Action has magic grace and power in it.
Profit flows, where your attention goes.
Make a note of that – and say that out loud with me – profit flows where attention goes.
Step 1 – how much is enough? I have enough and am grateful for having enough
Step 2 – how much profit do you want to make? Profit flows where attention goes
So now for step 3 – taking action
For step 3 I’ll give you an example of something that has just happened in the past week
A person who attended my expenses and cash flow webinar asked a question about multiple income streams.
I was talking about the different types of accountants and this participant said – I want to track my different streams of income and my accountant says that’s not necessary – and he is confused about why he would say that.
I explained the difference is that the Tax agent – the tax accountant is reporting 1 line item to the tax office. “annual income for the business”
The tax office doesn’t need to see the multiple ways a business earns money through sales revenue, sales income.
We do want to know all the different ways we make sales income, sales revenue
A week after the webinar, he came back to me and he said, I’ve put together an XL spreadsheet to calculate my cashflow exactly the way you described it
I’ve set up a meeting with my accountant and have now identified what are the important multiple streams of income in my business. Thank you Ingrid, now I feel confident to talk to my accountant about this
My takeaway from this is – he took action.
Remember our diagram – The green line is about making decisions and taking action.
Nothing happens to you decide.
Here we are Today – in that blue circle – and every day we have a choice about which line we are on – what future are we creating?
We behave our way into the future …
I absolutely applaud you for being here listening to this podcast – So make the decision to show up to learn ways to make decisions and take action
If you’d like the replay of any of the recent webinars, please email me ingrid@ and put replay expenses/ cash flow or Profit first in the subject and I’ll send you the link to the replay
That’s an action you can take right now
My action every day is – who can I help today? Who else is looking for what I offer? How to make a difference!
We know that when we help others and we share what we have, it really changes what comes towards us.
There is a whole universal energy exchange going on all the time
If you’re here and listening on a regular basis, it’s because you are the sort of person who knows what it’s like to share your gifts, to share your wisdom, to share your expertise with your clients and with everybody.
So what, when it comes to money, my gorgeous mother used to say:
“It’s made round to go round.”
When you think of the coins, when you think of money, it’s just a means of exchange really.
As my mum always said, “It’s made round to go round.” And so who can we help? How can you share your funds?
How can you share your energy, your expertise, your skills and your service with other people – that’s what you are doing in business – sharing what you have and being paid for it
So let’s return to throwing our backpacks over the wall.
It means making your commitment
Nothing happens until you decide.
And so by throwing your backpack over the wall, now you absolutely have to get over that wall.
In what way have you absolutely “thrown your back pack over the wall?? I’d love to hear from you ingrid@ and let me know
If this is something that has really resonated with you and you know someone else who needs to hear this message – please share this podcast episode with them
Is it time to make the decision that you’re going to work on the money side of your business?
Let’s have that first part of William H Murray’s quote one more time:
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness….
When we do something a bit half-hearted, and I’m – full disclosure here, I sometimes get a bit half-hearted about things and I think “Yes, I’m going to do that, but you know what, if it doesn’t work out, I’ve got my plan B”
And so, you know, just last week, there was a few things that happened. I was walking along and I was thinking to myself,
Oh, why am I even doing this?
Then there, walking in front of me was a man with a t-shirt on that said, never give up.
So I said, thank you to the universe for just giving that to me, because the chance to draw back. And that, hesitancy, – isn’t that beautiful word. I love hesitancy. The “never give up” was a reminder to me that by having a Plan B – was hesitancy
And so when we fully decide, we’re going to go in, we take the action and remember, action has magic grace and power in it.
That beautiful reminder from William H Murray’s quote:
” … that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no-one could have dreamt would have come his way.
The universe rushes to greet us when we make the decision, when we commit
When we throw our back pack over the wall
Let’s leave today’s episode with that thought and remind ourselves.
Action has grace power and magic in it
We behave our way into the future
The green line is about making decisions and taking action
Thanks so much for being here, thank you for listening
What action are you inspired to take today?
