In this So You Want to Start a Business podcast Ingrid Thompson interviews Jill Soley.
Episode 107 is with Jill Soley, a Silicon Valley author, product and marketing executive.
Jill has been launching and growing innovative cloud-based software products at startups and large companies for the past 16 years. Some of those products, like Adobe Creative Cloud, have spurred new growth for mature businesses and others have had lesser fates.
Jill has learned many lessons the hard way and seen a lot of the same mistakes made over and over and over again by super-smart product and technology leaders. Jill has authored a book called “Beyond Product” to help entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls and build their ideas into successful businesses.
Currently, she is the Chief Product Officer at Obo, working on agile product management software that addresses the high failure rates for new products. Jill has a wealth of experience in a number of startups in the speciality of product development.
Her career began in documentary film and educational multimedia, learning how to educate through stories and elicit others’ stories – critical to marketing and product success. She has brought these skills to the StartUp space.
Some great quotes from Jill during the podcast:
“So many great lessons from Jill in her interview, but I particularly loved this quote:
If you are solving a real problem for a market that really needs it, you have room to make some execution mistakes BUT if you execute flawlessly on a product that no-one needs … you are doomed to failure!
And this one….
“Ideas are a dime a dozen. It’s about the execution of the idea.”
