When I cut my finger the body replaces the cells through regeneration. Read on to find out what regeneration means to a starfish!
My sense has always been that many people totally identify withe the story – and want to make a difference – as well as the frustrations when constrained in the corporate world.
At a networking breakfast I attended the lady sitting beside me asked “Why Starfish?” She had been a biologist (before starting her printing business) and had specialised in Starfish! How completely random!
She told me “Starfish are not a fish! They are a Sea Star” – I knew this.
What I didn’t know was that the Starfish can regenerate itself – completely!
If they lose an arm they can grow another one.
In fact Japanese pearl farmers had tried to rid their oyster beds of starfish by cutting them in half only to create twice as many as each half grew new arms to make up to the full 5 arms!
How’s that for an amazing example of regeneration?
If you know me you’ll imagine how excited this made me feel. Now I could add another really good reason for the Starfish to be a symbol for business.
This was more than 20 years ago and I was pretty much on my own with Starfish as a symbol for anything. They are a bit more common now in branding and logos.
What a terrific symbol to represent the ability for us as business owners to recreate and to reinvent ourselves to meet the changing needs of our customers and to respond to the changing dynamics around us.
We know this is one of the advantages of SMEs – the ability to be nimble and adaptable.
What I also discovered is that the Sea Star, the starfish, can shed an arm in times of danger, or in defence.
How fantastic is this?
Again a great analogy for business; being nimble and adaptable and able to shed parts of the business that is not working, or as circumstances change and that “arm” is no longer necessary.
It is not by accident that we refer to “that arm of our business”
The Starfish, being a master of regeneration is a terrific symbol for Business!
