Let me introduce Margaret Douglas …
I recently listened to a fascinating podcast interview and I wanted to tell you about it. If you want to jump straight to the interview, you can listen in: click here
Margaret Douglas was 28 & pregnant when her husband died in 1723 – almost 300 years ago.
You may or may not have heard of Adam Smith?
Adam Smith is considered the founding father of economics and he asked this crucial question:
“How do you get your dinner?”
Adam Smith used this question “How do you get your dinner?” as the basis for understanding and then determining how the whole economy of the world (his world) worked at that time. His theory remains the prevailing economic theory today.
I recommend you listen to this podcast interview: click here
We listen in as 2 super smart women – Vicki Saunders – Founder of SheEO – and Katrine Marcel – author of this book “Who Cooked Adam Smith’s Dinner?” as they discuss what history tell us about the role of women in the economy – and it is FASCINATING!!
As Adam Smith devised his model through answering this question “How do you get your dinner?”– that rational self-interest and competition leads to economic prosperity – he forgot about his own mother who got his dinner for him!
There are other interesting and surprising facts of history in this discussion:
When Adam turned 2 he inherited his father’s estate and Margaret Douglas looked after him for the rest of her days. Fascinating how things worked back in the 1700s!
Katrine’s is a fascinating perspective – that innovation has been held back based on our ideas about gender.
Did you know the first electric car was invented almost 150 years ago – for women!
Why? Because women didn’t like the noise and the smell of the cars at the time. No man would be seen DEAD in an electric car ….
The wheelie trolley suitcase bag – when do you think this was invented? When did we stop lugging those awkward suitcases around to having our bags on wheels?
I travelled a lot as a teenager and in my 20s and eventually bought a small trolley to haul my case around.
I remember when wheelie bags first became seriously popular in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
Katrine talks about the economic impact globally of the travel wheelie bag – invented in 1972.
Think about it – the wheel was invented 5000 – 5 thousand – years ago! By the time wheelie bag was invented, we had already landed on the moon!
Why did it take so long for the wheelie bag to become popular?
Again – like the electric car – a suitcase on wheels was seen as “for women” and at the time women didn’t travel on their own. And no man would be seen pulling along a bag with wheels …
Fascinating …
Truly I cannot suggest strongly enough that you listen to the whole of this episode. It will help to expand your thinking, and help with new perspective. Click here to listen.
As Katrine Marcel says:
“Economics needs feminism and feminism needs economics. It’s so key for solving the problems we have today. I firmly believe this is the perspective we need. This is what can fix our economic problems.”
If you think I sound excited about this podcast interview – you are absolutely right. I am excited about this new perspective and sharing it.
To me, it’s super important to bring you information that is new and different and helps to make us THINK.
