Last Saturday morning, I was listening to one of my favourite radio shows of the week and my ears pricked up at this story for 2 reasons; I love pears AND this is such a SMART idea:
80% of pears consumed in Australia come from the Goulburn Valley. Imagine! 80%!
Two hailstorms have decimated this years’ pear crops in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley.
So that means 80% of the pears going into the Australian market this coming season will be damaged or not looking like perfect pears.
So the pear industry has come up with a great idea: Hailstorm Heroes: Battler Pear and Guru Pear!
The industry is asking supermarkets to support its ‘hailstorm heroes’ campaign, to sell some of the slightly damaged fruit.
It’s the brainchild of Olivia Tait of Apple and Pear Australia, who wants to give the damaged fruit an identity.
“I came up with two initially, which was Battler Pear, he’s the great survivor.
He’s the one saying, “I’ve been through the worst, some of the others didn’t make it but I survived.”
A few little nicks and marks shouldn’t deter customers.
The other one is Guru Pear and guru pear is all about the beauty lies within. So don’t be put off by the aesthetics.”
How very clever, and to anticipate this and be prepared and take the campaign to the supermarkets ….If you want to listen to the full interview on Radio National click here
