Every day I read for about an hour in the afternoon. It’s my end of work day routine.
One of the books I dip in and out of is the biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson you know the really thick book – with almost 700 pages!! It’s daunting!
This week I read 7 words that resonated SO strongly for me that I almost cannot describe how I felt – “relieved” springs immediately to mind and gratitude for the answer to so many of the questions buzzing around in my head. Maybe you have similar questions?
Do you ever feel like you are facing a wall? Facing a very high wall?
Do you feel like you’ve reached a point where the challenges in front of you and the decisions you need to make are mounting? And accumulating, more and more of them?
And do you feel it’s not that you don’t know what to do next, you’re absolutely stumped as to how to do it.
Well, let me share my recently discovered seven words.
Apple has continuously created products others believe cannot be made, Apple does things that others think cannot be done.
For example: when the very first iPhone was being developed it required a special type of glass that had never been made before. You may remember the flip phone and all the previous phones had plastic.
The iPhone design required glass – an extremely hard and durable glass. This was late 2006. Glass had not been used in phones before. The new design needed glass – not hard plastic (can you imagine a plastic iPhone??)
Steve Jobs called Wendell Weeks, the CEO of Corning Glass and told him what he needed. Weeks told him about a product Corning had created in the 1960s – so tough they had nicknamed “gorilla glass.”
Jobs thought this would be ideal! “We’ll have that”
Weeks laughed because the product had never been developed, nor had it gone into production AND Corning was operating at full capacity and weren’t in a position to work with Apple right now.
Steve Jobs said:
“Don’t be afraid. You can do it”
“I’m not afraid” was the response from Weeks who went on to explain about technical challenges …
So Jobs says again: “Don’t be afraid. You can do it.”
Weeks continued to explain the technical challenges … and added the logistic and the supply challenges.
So Jobs again says: “Don’t be afraid. You can do it.”
The best part of the story is where Wendall Weeks used these same words on his team when they said all the same things to him that he had said to Steve Jobs.
The team push back “We cannot …” so he says to them “Don’t be afraid. You can do it.” More than once, just as Jobs had said to him!
And they did!! 6 months later Corning produced, at quantity, high-quality glass that had never been made before.
Steve Jobs believed in Wendell Weeks and he in turn believed in his team.
It was at that moment that I realised these seven words truly have a magic quality.
I said it out loud to myself “Don’t be afraid. You can do it” and that’s when I felt relieved. “Oh, it’s our old friend fear causing this feeling of overwhelm!” (I recorded a podcast about our friend fear – click here for episode number 139 “making friends with fear”)
Again, I said it out loud to myself “Don’t be afraid. You can do it” and I could almost hear Steve Jobs saying it, my mum saying it, my mentors saying it … and I felt that I could and I can!!
Now I say these same seven words to you:
All those challenges, all those decisions, all those obstacles are in front of all of us … I say this to you “Don’t be afraid. You can do it.”
I truly believe you can do whatever it is …
“Don’t be afraid. You can do it.”
