The unexpected – are you prepared?
These boots belong to Carl Oberg who is a volunteer firefighter and shows the soles of his boots melted from the heat. Each and every one of us is so enormously grateful to the dedication of our career and volunteer fire fighters and to everyone working to save lives; human lives and animal lives.
I’m in awe of the generosity of everyone across the globe to financially help all of the various agencies supporting those suffering; both human and wildlife. A koala sanctuary at Port Macquarie thought they would raise $20 000 and the donations soared past $1m as we all reeled with the devastating news about koalas in those PM fires. Australian Comedian Celeste Barber launched a FB campaign that has raised more than $41m in just a few days. Staggering!!
It certainly has been a totally unexpected start to our 2020.
I truly believe we may never know the full cost of these fires.
As business owners and aspiring business owners how do we prepare for the unexpected?
Here is a helpful checklist from Chartered Accountants Australia for small business owners affected by natural disasters click here
Wherever you are in the world – would you be ready if the unexpected happened??
A few items I would add to their list, simple things like:
- Are your computer backups up to date?
- Is your list of codes and passwords some where you can access from anywhere?
- Do you have insurance? to cover your business? your income?
It may not be your business directly affected, it may be your customers, clients and/or suppliers. Do you have contingencies?
This is a terrific time to take stock of your business contingency plans.
None of us think it will ever happen to us, thing is it can happen so very quickly and out of the blue.
The stories of generosity and kindness and now flooding social media. Animal stories of wonderful people rescuing and treating wildlife. I love this one about Tinny Arse the koala: click here
I think one of the most typically Australian demonstration of appreciation is this one about the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Click here to read that one
