I started this podcast back in March 2015 and everything has changed when it comes to podcasts and at the same time some things have stayed the same.

Today I talk about what’s coming up in this podcast for 2021 – our 7th year of podcasting.

There are now almost 2 million podcasts … can you believe it ?? almost 2 million!

Hello my friends and thank you for joining me today

Welcome to the podcast …. In fact welcome back to the podcast in 2021

Today is a short episode and I just want to explain – about taking a break and where I’ve been and where we are going next – with this podcast

It is super important that I let you know so you can come along on this next stage of the journey … and it is all good and it is exciting …

 

I started this podcast in March 2015 – that’s almost 6 years ago – because I was inspired by a podcast I was listening to – JLD Entrep on Fire – and JLD has been on my podcast and I have been a guest on his podcast as well.

 

Prior to that and about 10 years ago I was asked to speak at a conference for Virtual Assistants about podcasting and how a VA could add value to their client by understanding and knowing about podcasting. It created a lot of interest. I was using recorded interviews to share information with my audience… I was fascinated by how we could use podcasting for business.

I’m a life long radio nerd … I’ve always felt that podcasts are just like listening to the radio only even more convenient

 

My podcast came about when I started the process to write my book.  I thought it would be good to interview people about how they got started in their business – so we could learn from them. No one else was doing that at the time … now there are dozens, hundreds of starting a business podcasts.

 

I wanted to interview a variety of business owners because I know how much we can learn from other industries …

 

Years ago when I worked in the corporate world I was on a project that taught me that we learn from a range of other businesses across industries.  That what works in this business here – can be applied to other businesses that have nothing to do with the same industry.

 

The example I often give people is the project I was in where Ready-mix – the largest concrete company in Aust – Readymix wanted to improve their delivery.

We looked around to see – who else does what we do that we could learn from??

And if you have heard this example before – you know we looked at how Pizza Hut could deliver their pizzas so fast

When you think about it – they are very similar steps – the customer orders the concrete – or the pizza – the company makes it and delivers it – fast and on time and exactly to the specifics of what the customer orders

 

So this is why I wanted to interview a range of different businesses for my podcast – we can learn from every different business.

 

The questions I ask have stayed close to the same since the beginning all these years and episodes later

 

As you have probably noticed, over time, some of the interviews are more like conversations between me and my guest rather than a rigid question and answer style interview.

 

If you have been listening for a while you know I often have some thing to add, or another perspective to bring to what the guest is saying – so it’s more conversational than interview

 

Every 2 weeks for pretty much the whole time since I started, there has been a new episode arrive – there is a web page for each episode where you can listen without subscribing to itunes or stitcher or all the other platforms it goes out on … who knew there were so many and just last week another platform was added. Some of the episodes have full transcripts as well – on the website

 

A few months ago I started adding short “snack size” episodes of Just me and at first I called them the In-between episodes. So now there are episodes every week

 

Here’s the thing – these shorter episodes are becoming as popular – if not more so – than the interview conversations

 

This had me thinking – and I have to admit, I have been thinking “Where’s this podcast going?” for a little while now

 

I asked my mastermind group what did they think? And to be 100 % honest I didn’t really like any of their suggestions … it’s always good to ask others thoughts and opinions  … and at the same time, sometimes WE know what’s best for our business

 

My darling dad used to always say “If in doubt – Don’t”

So I didn’t quite know what to do next, so I didn’t do anything – except I took a break – which is why there haven’t been any episodes for a few weeks

 

I’ve had some time to think about what to do? Where to go?

 

and also to look at the data – to look at the numbers.

 

Faced with a business decision – it’s always important to look to the numbers for evidence of what’s going on

 

The data told me:

There are hundreds of downloads for every episode – we know that this podcast is in the top 20% of podcast downloads – there are almost 2 million podcasts and this is in the top 20% – thank you, each and every one of you – for listening and for sharing episodes

 

I looked at the map of where the downloads are and they are across 80 countries around the globe … 80 countries

The US remains by far the largest audience – thank you for tuning in

Itunes is the most used for downloading

I checked my book sales – because that is the only advertising – consistent book sales across all channels – some weeks higher than others.

Thank you if you have bought my book or sent the link to someone you know needs to read the book

I truly appreciate that

We have a private FB Group and 1 in 2 of the members who ask to join say “I heard about this on the podcast”

 

The data says: “this podcast is valuable to the listeners”

 

So that’s good enough for me to keep the episodes coming

 

I had reached a point where I made a list of all the marketing activity I was doing – podcast, blogs, newsletters, my website, the FB Group, the weekly LIVINARS, activity on LinkedIn and there were more than 10 regular content distribution and I was feeling overwhelmed – I have since discovered that it has a technical term

 

Marketing content BURNOUT

 

Yep, that was me – Burnt OUT

 

So what would have to go and let me tell you my wonderful listeners the podcast is definitely staying put!!

 

The other important aspect is that a range of different people listen to the podcast – some of you listening have not actually started a business, some of you love listening to podcasts, some of you just love listening to me … and my Aussie accent J I received an email from a listener who said “Ingrid you are SO real – and I love that”

 

Yep, that’s me, real! Authentic. Genuinely interested in business and fascinated by how business works …

 

Another listener emailed me and said “Ingrid it is SO obvious you just love chatting with your guests”

 

And every guest who has been on the show has said to me at the end – This is the best interview I have ever done …

 

OK, so what’s next? As we take this podcast into 2021 and into it’s 7th year (7 year itch!!)? what’s happening?

 

More from me – more of the In-between episodes – only now they will have “equal billing”

 

The interviews will definitely continue and in fact I have some terrific interviews lined up – with some terrific guests already recorded and ready to go – ANOTHER reason I couldn’t just stop …. These wonderful people have made the time to tell their stories so I want to honour that by sharing their episodes … stay tuned

 

So my episodes will be a mix of a few things:

 

Mindset and having the right mindset is VITAL to being able to in business and especially when it comes to money. This will be a recurring theme.

 

There will also be some practical episodes – talking about pricing and discounts and expenses and cash flow …  episode 145 where I talk about revenue vs profit and what is the difference – is one of the most listened to – so I know my practical, bite size, easy to understand approach to explaining money and how it works in your business is what people are looking for

Keeping it simple, keeping it real – over the past month I have run a couple of webinars and I will take some of that content and bring it here to the podcast – calculating expenses

Managing cash flow

 

I’ll include examples from clients – with their permission and always honouring confidentiality

 

I’ve been working with small business owners for almost 20 years and have ton of examples and case studies –

 

The purpose is to help you bring consistent results to your business
