Have you heard the Jim Rohn quote “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
We are told to choose our friends wisely because we will be known ‘by the company we keep.’
Or, consider this, ‘With friends like that, who needs enemies.’
Choosing good company is important; especially, with those who radiate optimism, harmony and enthusiasm-choosing good company is good for the body, mind, spirit, and a peaceful life.
With this in mind, I’d like to ask you to consider the following important questions:
What kind of company are You to You?
You spend your entire life in your own company so are you your own best friend or your own worst enemy?
Look in the mirror and ask You if You like your own company- this is an Important question!
Are You good company with Yourself? What does your inner voice in the back of your mind have to say about YOU?
I was working with a client about a month ago and she was telling me about the inner voice she could hear inside her head that some times says the most awful things to her; her own voice.
I asked her “What would happen if you didn’t pay so much attention to this voice?”
“What do you mean?” she asked
“Well, what would happen if you ignored it? or pretended that you couldn’t hear? or thought to yourself “here we go again” and rolled your eyes the way you might at an annoying parent or boss or other person”
I explained to her the concept of imagining that this voice belongs to a person and to give that person a name.
My client said “Oh I know her already, she’s Angela”
“Now what would you say to a real life Angela if she spoke to you this way?”
In a flash she came back with “I’d just ignore her and think “what do you know? and carry on”
This was interesting. If my client was so clear bout what she would tell a “real Angela” why then would she not respond the same way to an internal voice? She decided that she would try it out and see what happened.
Her task was to listen for that internal voice saying anything negative or discouraging and she was going to say “Oh Angela, what would you know? I know what I’m doing here”
For the past couple of weeks she has been using this technique and she reports that it has made a big difference. For the first few days it felt a bit odd and now just a couple of weeks down the track that voice is dimmed and doesn’t have the same power it had ….
“Ingrid, it’s amazing; just telling her to back off and keep quiet is making such a difference. I’m doing things I didn’t think I could”
Love these stories ….
