How would you spend $100 to market your business?
Late last year I was invited to be on a panel event with MindBody here in Sydney and one of the other panelists was Richard Toutounji from ComMarketing. He was asked a question something like this “There are SO many platforms to spend money on marketing, where should I focus? Richard, how would you spend $100 to market your business?”
And we all know this to be true – right? We could spend money on Adwords, Facebook, Remarketing, LinkedIn Ads, hiring a marketing person, and the list goes on and on and on.
Here’s what Richard said:
“Let me tell you how I like to think about this question:
If I had only $100 to spend on marketing, what would I would do?”
Most of us don’t have unlimited budgets so I thought you’d be keen to hear how he answered his own question about only having $100 to spend on marketing.
So here goes – are you ready?
He said: “If I had ONLY $100 to spend on marketing…
“I wouldn’t spend it on marketing at all. In fact, I’d put it in my back pocket and spend it on something else.”
You won’t be surprised that everyone laughed … sort of laughed …
He went on to say: “Because that $100 is not going to go very far in the marketing world to get you significant results and could probably be better spent on something else.”
I’m going to paraphrase the rest of his answer … because it’s absolutely terrific!!
He went on to say …
So, if we’re not SPENDING MONEY and we still NEED LEADS… then what else should we be doing?
Another great question. Now that you’ve saved that $100, the thing to do is grab your phone, open up Facebook and press the ‘GO LIVE’ button.
Why? Facebook LIVE Videos are the best platform in 2020 to get the most reach and traction WITHOUT spending any money.
So what should you be doing on a Facebook LIVE?
Ask 5 of your best clients (the ones who most closely match your ideal avatar – the ones you’re trying to target) to spend 5-10 minutes doing a quick interview with you.
Now – it’s really important to choose to interview someone who is your exact avatar.
So if you want to attract mums who’ve just had a baby, interview a mum who has just had a baby.
If your avatar is professional males 35-45 interview a male 35-45. You get the picture, right?
- Why did they start training/ coaching/ working with you?
- What has been the benefit for them from working with you?
- What are the results have they achieved?

Richard suggests the interviews be anywhere between 5-15 minutes long.
Interview Your 5 selected people over a period of 2 weeks on your Business PAGE using FaceBook LIVE. Once you have finished the live video here’s your next steps:
- Share it to you personal profile and any groups
- Download the video and send it to you email database
- Upload the video to Instagram (if you use Instagram) or any other social media platforms that you use.
When sharing it whether on email, or to other platforms include a call to action that asks people to contact you personally if they would like the same results (eg. reply back, comment, etc.).
NOW, if you really want to spend that $100 – the ONLY place Richard said he would spend it is on boosting those Live Videos.
Choose an interest audience that matches your avatar. What you have then is a whole heap of people who match your avatar who are watching an interview with someone who is EXACTLY like them and who is getting the results that they want to get.
And that’s it – that’s what Richard told all of us in the room that day about how he would spend $100 if he had it to spend on marketing.
