Most years on or close to 8 March I host an International Women’s Day dinner. I invite each guest to please bring with them 2 other women. The first is a woman they invite to come along. The second woman is some one to talk about; a woman who inspires them and they need to be prepared to talk about why they are inspired by this woman. Sometimes the two women are the same, the invited woman also inspires them.
It is always terrific to meet new women, friends of friends. We eat and drink together and all the while talking about women who inspire us.
Over the years I’ve “met” some pretty amazing women at these dinners. Estee Lauder, Harper Lee, Kaye’s aunt, Lisa’s friend…..and so many more. At the same time I have learned about what inspires others. Fascinating!
The earliest International Women’s Day was held in New York in 1909 and it was organised to remember a strike in 1908 of the Industrial Ladies Garment Workers’ Union. Over the years it has continued to be observed and celebrated around the world, although not always strictly on 8 March. Russia has a public holiday and so too do other European & South American countries.
The theme internationally this year was Be Bold for Change and we are being called upon to join forces to accelerate gender parity.
Each and every one of you reading this is already Being Bold for Change! As you create and run your businesses you are making a statement about what you are able to achieve and drawing attention to what others around you are able to achieve.
Each and every one of you reading this are inspiring to me and to others around you. Never for a moment doubt that you inspire others. When others see what you are doing in your business that encourages them to work towards their goals and dreams.
Next Wednesday is International Women’s Day. Take a moment to think about a woman who inspires you…. What is it about this woman that inspires you? Maybe even get together with a couple of others and have an Inspiring International Women’s Day lunch, dinner, coffee or maybe a glass of wine.
And for all the men reading, you can do this as well…
