Is it just me? OR has Facebook become so SATURATED with ads and clutter so it’s increasingly difficult to see the posts that I actually want to see.
Honestly, if I see one more post telling me I can become a ‘7 Figure Entrepreneur when you buy my Facebook Ads 5 day Marketing Funnel Challenge bla bla bla’ then I will scream! (If you’ve actually had 7 figure success with one of these programs, then please let me know!)
My newsfeed is flooded with this salesy stuff and every week it just seems to get worse. And in the last month or two I have been getting FB Private Messages from people I don’t even know trying to sell me the latest whizz-bang program.
OK Mr Zuckerberg, I get it, you’re addicted to making lots of money for yourself and your shareholders – you are afterall, a business! In order to make alot of money you have to sell advertising space on FB (and Instagram now – that’s another story).
Here’s the thing, it really feels like it’s getting out of control.🤢
I’ve been a huge Facebook fan from way back – I joined FB in May 2009 as a relatively early-adopter in Australia. I’ve used FB extensively to share my life with friends and relatives all around the world. It’s always been a fun way to stay connected.
I remember my uncle in Northern Ireland emailing me to tell me “I see everything you do, you and your mum were at a wine tasting last week.” “Yep, that’s exactly why I’m on FB Uncle Bobby”. I’ve really valued that ability to connect across generations and countries!
I’ve used FB for my business and have enjoyed reasonable engagement on my Business FB page.
Truth is, these days I am feeling more sceptical, and, to be brutally honest, I’m losing interest fast. In fact I’ve lost interest to the extent that I rarely look at FB and cannot remember my last post. A number of friends have contacted me to ask if I’m OK? “Are you off FB?” they ask.
I get that EVERYONE is on social. And I know that in Australia, 96% of people have a Facebook account. (That’s insane, right? Especially considering that about 10 years ago it didn’t even EXIST.)
Every business has jumped on the social media bandwagon to such an extent that it’s busy, over-saturated, and increasingly hard to be seen. It’s difficult to get a ‘like’ much less a sale or a lead. And if you’re not posting videos, or Facebook Live, well all I can say is good luck!
If you are anything like me, these days your ordinary business posts struggle to get a decent organic reach, not necessarily because of poor content, it’s just because paid ads now take precedence. And there’s no way I want to spend $100 a month on Facebook Ads, let alone $1 000 a week!
And still plenty of businesses run ads, hold their breath, *hope like hell* they’re going to work and never really see results. It’s become a very expensive exercise.
Just this week I spoke to a business owner spending thousands every month between FB ads and SEO. I asked him, “How many new clients do you need to pay for that every month?”
Honestly, take that money and spend it on your existing clients and grow your business based on exceptional service. That money could pay for a whole new team member for your business. Imagine the customer service improvement that would bring?
So, I ask, is it time to have the “It’s not me, it’s you” conversation with FB?
So, where is this FB frustration heading?
I’ve joined a few of the right groups, the right size and with the right audience where it’s possible to develop relationships with people who might do business with me down the track.
I’m not into Snapchat and in fact, I’m not really sure what it does. I’ve signed up for Instagram and am slowly learning, and starting to enjoy it.
Insta has less ads and some truly beautiful images. I’ve still got to get used to the 30 spammy hashtags on every post – what do they do? And what is the point of the whole Instagram Stories thing?
As Mr Zuckerberg also owns Instagram, we know where its ultimately headed and I have started to noticed more sponsored material peppering my Insta feed.
Where does all this leave ME (and maybe YOU)?
My preferred method of communicating with people is Linkedin. I believe LinkedIn is where most of my audience spend their time. That’s you. You head to LinkedIn for information and for inspiration.
I’ll continue to focus my efforts on that platform. With the occasional FB post and Tweet.
A friend recently told me about Pinterest, and she reckons it might be the next big thing……..so maybe I should pop on over and check it out sometime – or maybe not!!
What is your favourite Social Media platform? Is Facebook saturation also driving you a bit crazy?
Let me know. I’m keen to hear what you think.
