You know that bad news sells. It is negative events that attract saturation coverage, interruption of usual TV programming and wall to feature stories in the papers. But why?
It’s a matter of evolution and our drive to survive. Neuropsychologist Rick Hanson, author of “Buddha’s Brain” tells us that the brain typically detects negative information faster than positive information, and preferentially scans for, registers and reacts to unpleasant experiences. I love how he puts it: “Your brain is like Velcro for negative experience and Teflon for positive ones”. This is because negative events generally have more impact than positive ones so we are wired to be on the alert for anything that could affect us adversely.
His suggestion to counteract this wiring is to foster positive experiences and we can use tapping to assist us in that.
- As I teach everyone with Faster EFT, after you have tapped to release negative emotions, physical sensations, thoughts or memories, always focus on creating a positive experience, before moving on e.g. peaceful instead of angry, strong instead of weak, “I can do this” instead of “It’s impossible.” Savour , enrich and enjoy this.
- Turn your focus to noticing all the good things that are happening all the time – encourage from a friend, beautiful flowers, the satisfaction of completing a project, a delicious meal. You can tap at any time to assist your energy system to align to the good feelings that emanate from this focus.
- If you say positive affirmations tap while you say them for an enhanced result.
- Use tapping to reduce stress and anxiety – it works through the amygdala to reduce the levels of cortisol and adrenalin in your blood stream, promoting feelings of relaxation and calm. This makes you better placed to absorb the positive good feelings and thoughts.
Dr Hanson says that “Given the negativity bias of the brain, it takes an active effort to internalize positive experiences and heal negative ones. When you tilt toward what’s positive, you’re actually righting a neurological imbalance”. And, happily, builds stronger immune and cardiovascular systems as well as increasing optimism, resilience, and resourcefulness.
Great reasons to do some tapping! And if you need any support to get you unstuck please give me a call to have a chat.
