Yesterday I explained how the Starfish first became a symbol for me and for the things that I do. It started many years ago when I first heard the adaptation of the Star Thrower story.
The second reason comes from what happened one time I was telling the Starfish Story:
I was working at the time in a training role in a large Corporation. At the time that organisation was going through significant changes and people were unhappy and unmotivated and we were always looking for ways to create and inspire people to overcome their own difficulties and try to give great customer service to both external and internal customers.
We were at a large gathering of staff at a site in Melbourne and I was telling the Starfish Story (publicly for the first time) and in the early days I used to get a lump in my throat when I told it …. especially as I got to the end and “I made a difference to that one”
There was silence as the group thought about the message … and then from the back of the room someone called out:
“That’s all very well for the kid walking on the beach, but she didn’t have some B#%@#tard from Corporate standing out there on a sand bank chucking the Starfish back up on the beach!”
Certainly, a moment I will never forget!
